Experience the townships and privileged areas of Soweto and Cape Town. Get a unique encounter with South African culture when we meet young people in the South Africa YMCA. Experience South Africa's amazing nature with a safari among wild animals in Pilanesberg, surfing in the fierce waves in Muizenberg and hiking up the iconic Table Mountain.
APARTHEID AND THE STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM
In South Africa, we explore the history of apartheid and the long struggle for freedom. At the same time, we try to understand why the country still has the world's largest differences between rich and poor more than 30 years after apartheid was abolished. We go to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, learn from skilled local guides on a bike tour of the township of Soweto and visit Robben Island, the island outside Cape Town where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for over 18 years. We explore the country's enormous contrasts by traveling in both townships and privileged areas.
MEETINGS AND CULTURE
South Africa has a very diverse population and culture. The study tour gives you a unique opportunity to experience South African culture through our meetings with South African youth at the South Africa YMCA. Parts of the culture are playful, rhythmic, proud and deeply rooted in community and musicality, and you will experience how important music, dance and community are in the lives of many. You will have the chance to hear what young South Africans see as their challenges and opportunities. In Cape Town we will go to a concert with talented South African musicians.
South Africa has a wonderfully varied and beautiful nature! We go on safari in South Africa's fifth largest national park Pilanesberg and get up close to several wild animals. We visit the long white beaches in and around Cape Town, where you can soak up the sun, swim with cute penguins and surf in the fierce waves. We go on a hike up to Table Mountain and enjoy the extraordinarily beautiful view of Cape Town. The panoramic view at sunset on Signal Hill takes most people's breath away.
