Vitor Macedo

Volleyball has taken Vitor Macedo from Rio via Førde and Canada to gold and titles in the Norwegian elite series. Now you can find him in the hall at Oslo Folk High School Rønningen.

From Rio to Førde
Vitor grew up on the coast of the megacity of Rio de Janeiro and played every sport that involved a hand and a ball – basketball, handball and eventually volleyball.
– My friends just wanted to play volleyball, and I wanted to be with them.

Although Rio is known for beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana, it wasn't beach volleyball that caught his attention. In his environment, indoor volleyball was the big thing.

In February 2009, he joined a friend to organize a volleyball session for a group of tourists on the beach. They were his own age, and Vitor quickly got to know both the players and the coach.
– I became good friends with them, and then they asked if I wanted to come to Norway.

A few months later, Vitor started at Sunnfjord Folk High School in Førde – his first trip outside of Brazil.

– No one in Brazil knew what folk high school was, so it was a big decision. But it was social, exciting – and I got to play a lot of volleyball. It was a good year.

Canada and college volleyball
After the year in Førde, the journey continued to Oslo Volley. There, Vitor found a Canadian teammate who helped him apply to college in North America.

The result was two years at Lethbridge College in Alberta, before continuing on to three years at Camosun College, where he played for the Chargers, helping them win two consecutive provincial championships and a national title.
– My friends from that time still say it was the best game I've ever played in my life.

– I am more than just a coach. As a folk high school teacher, I can use my enthusiasm and interpersonal skills in a completely different way.

Back to Norway

After completing his education, Vitor envisioned a career as a coach, but was drawn back to Sunnfjord – this time by Førde VBK, who offered him a professional contract. He jumped at the chance.

When Vitor joined mid-season, Førde were in fifth place, but with the Brazilian on the team they found their way to victory. By the end of the season they were on top of the podium. Vitor stayed for four more seasons, before injuries eventually put an end to his playing career.

In parallel with his playing career, Vitor had already taken the steps into the coaching role. He led Førde's women's team to the club's first titles – two cup gold medals and a league championship – and in 2020 he was given responsibility for the Norwegian U20 national team for girls.

Later, he went to Tromsø, where he combined his job as a teacher at NTG with the role of coach of the club's A-team. There, he made history again when the women's team won the club's first cup and league title. Before the 2024/25 season, he took over the men's team and led them all the way to the cup final.

– I always tell my players that the turning point comes when you start to appreciate the small, daily victories and the progress we make. When it becomes fun, then we are on the right track.

Back to folk high school

After several years in top volleyball, Vitor chose to bring his experience into a new arena. In the fall of 2025, he started as a teacher in the newly launched top volleyball program at Oslo Folk High School Rønningen.
– When you coach a team, it's a lot about getting the group to perform. Now I can focus more on developing the players as individuals.

He experiences the teaching role as an opportunity to use his whole self.
– I am more than just a coach. As a folk high school teacher, I can use my enthusiasm and interpersonal skills in a completely different way.

Now he is ready to develop the next generation of top players – both as people and athletes – with the core values of continuity, discipline and fun at the core.

– I always tell my players that the turning point comes when you start to appreciate the small, daily victories and the progress we make. When it becomes fun, then we are on the right track.
