Do you want to learn Norwegian and get to know Norwegian society and everyday life together with others from all over the world? On this course we focus on Norwegian language, culture and society. You learn the Norwegian language, spoken and written. At the same time, we reflect on what a good society is. How do our choices really affect the kind of community we get? Here you get the opportunity to understand your own background and your values in light of Norwegian society. Everything happens in nice facilities with a fantastic international community.

A YEAR IN NORWEGIAN: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Here you will improve your skills in spoken and written Norwegian. You will learn the most important features of Norwegian grammar. You will have the opportunity to hear Norwegian and use Norwegian in all situations; whether it is a conversation on the edge of the bed with your roommate, political discussions or in meetings with various social actors.

Teaching takes place in the classroom through language teaching, lectures, classroom discussions and project work. We also go on excursions and you get to practice your Norwegian in authentic everyday situations at and outside of school. The Norwegian class consists of students from all over the world, but you also have electives and core subjects in Norwegian together with Norwegian classmates and get to practice your oral skills by living and working with them.

We use the city actively, and travel out of school every week. If we are going to learn how to order coffee at a café, we go to a café and practice in authentic situations. If we are learning about what it is like to be a child in Norway, we visit a Norwegian kindergarten. We visit museums, theaters, cafes, libraries, kindergartens, schools, the Storting and various organizations. We explore the fantastic outdoor recreation area Nordmarka and the beautiful Oslofjord. You get a free public transport pass for the entire school year and can explore the city on your own.

This course is suitable for those who want to learn Norwegian and explore Norway, whether you are a complete beginner or already know some Norwegian, whether you have a connection to Norway or are just curious about the country. For many of our students, this course is an opportunity to get to know the country and the language, which is an important part of their own identity and background. If you are interested in languages and different cultures and want to make friends for life from Norway and the whole world, this course is for you!

Get to know Oslo and Norway!

Throughout the school year, we actively use Oslo, and the city becomes an important part of our learning arena. We enjoy museums, cafes, stages, the Oslofjord, Nordmarka and everything the city has to offer, while taking advantage of the opportunities to practice different language situations in authentic surroundings. In addition, we visit important democratic institutions, such as the Storting, to learn about how Norwegian society is governed and organized. Such visits and experiences form the basis for exciting conversations about what characterizes Norwegian society, and what values and principles contribute to creating a good society for all.
